Executive Education

Pacific Northwest Nonprofit Executive Leadership Institute

The Center, in partnership with the Cascade Center for Public Service and Leadership at the Evans School, is pleased to offer the third annual Pacific Northwest Nonprofit Executive Leadership Institute, which will be held February 8-13, 2009 at the Talaris Conference Center in Seattle, Washington.

The Institute is a five-day residential program designed to enhance the strategic and visionary thinking of experienced nonprofit executives in the Pacific Northwest . In a retreat setting, participants will engage in an examination of their own leadership effectiveness and the deeper meaning of their work. The regional nature of the Institute will enable participants to build and sustain relationships with peers and instructors that will support them and their work in the years to come. Special attention will be given to self-care as well as renewing vision and passion for nonprofit work.

Program sessions will be led by a combination of academic faculty and experienced practitioners. Instructors will facilitate intellectually provocative sessions that expose participants to new insights and tools that will have a lasting impact. The use of case studies, peer consulting teams, 360-degree evaluations, group exercises, mock presentations, journaling, and panel discussions with local experts will create a highly participatory and multidimensional learning experience.

Applications for the program were due by November 21, 2008, and will be accepted thereafter on a rolling basis. Download a brochure or visit the course Web site for more information.

Exchange Programs

The North American Mobility Project: Developing Civil Society Education via Case Studies: A North American Perspective (DCSCS)

The Center is pleased to participate in this multi-year, trilateral DCSCS exchange program that focuses on providing students from the United States, Canada, and Mexico with an in-depth and comparative perspective on the complex and changing nature of the nonprofit sector and civil society in North America.

By the end of 2010, seven UW graduate-level and upper division undergraduate students will have had the opportunity to study at partner institutions Carleton University (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), McGill University (Montreal, Quebec, Canada), El Colegio Mexiquense, A.C. (Toluca, Mexico), and Instituto Tecnologicio y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (Mexico City, Mexico); work on trilateral teams; enroll in new case-study based, nonprofit management courses specifically designed for the program; work closely with local nonprofit organizations; and submit their case reports for possible publication on the Evans School's Electronic Hallway. A total of 50 students from the six partner institutions (including University of Texas at Austin) will participate in the exchange over the life of the program.

For the 2009-2010 academic year, two University of Washington students will be selected to participate in the program at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. The application process for the 2009-2010 exchange program is now posted.
