About the Center

The aim of the Nancy Bell Evans Center is to enhance the understanding and vitality of the nonprofit and philanthropic sector through research, education, and community engagement.

Research
The Center conducts and supports theoretical and applied research of local, national, and international importance to nonprofit and philanthropic scholars, policy-makers, and practitioners. Efforts focus primarily on research that examines the changing service and policy roles of nonprofit and philanthropic institutions.  Research is disseminated through the Center's education and community engagement activities.

Education
The Center serves as an incubator of research-based nonprofit and philanthropic education at the University of Washington, identifying, developing, and supporting advanced learning opportunities for graduate students and executive-level professionals in the Pacific Northwest.

Community Engagement
The Center convenes and connects members of the academic, nonprofit, and philanthropic communities to stimulate thinking on current issues, share research and best practices, and promote increased dialogue and collaboration.

The Center is directed by Steven Rathgeb Smith, Nancy Bell Evans Professor at the Evans School of Public Affairs. His publications include Nonprofits for Hire and Public Policy for Democracy. He is the former editor of Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, the journal of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA). In 2006 he began a two-year term as President of ARNOVA.
